Sugar Gets Cheaper Ahead of Festive Season as Retail Prices Fall 15 pc

New Delhi, Oct 1: As households across India prepare for Dussehra and Diwali, there is some relief on the kitchen budget. Sugar prices have eased in recent weeks, with the government reporting that retail prices have declined by around 15 per cent, while ex-mill prices have fallen by nearly 28 per cent.

The decline comes at a time when sugar consumption typically rises as families prepare traditional sweets and festive dishes. Sweet shops, bakeries and food businesses also increase production during the season, making sugar prices an important part of festive costs.

According to the government, the fall in ex-mill prices has remained steady in recent weeks. The reduction at the mill level is expected to gradually make its way through the supply chain as traders and retailers replenish their stocks.

A Little Relief for Festive Preparations

For households, lower sugar prices could help ease some of the cost involved in preparing sweets and other festive foods. For businesses, particularly sweet manufacturers and bakeries, a reduction in a key ingredient cost could provide some support during the high-demand season.

The development comes as consumers are already preparing for the traditional festive shopping period, when demand rises across food, grocery and consumer categories.

Government Keeps Watch on Supply

The government is also taking steps to ensure that sugar remains adequately available in the market during the festive period. Temporary stock-holding norms for dealers have been introduced to encourage the smooth movement of sugar through the supply chain and discourage excessive stock accumulation.

The government has also emphasised the need for the benefit of lower ex-mill prices to reach consumers.

With the festive season gaining momentum, the recent correction in sugar prices offers some welcome relief to households and businesses. For consumers preparing festive treats, a lower sugar bill could mean a little more room in the household budget for the celebrations ahead.
