Chennai, July 26, 2025: In an awe-inspiring display of endurance, grit, and determination, Dr. K. Jayanth Murali, a retired Indian Police Service officer, has etched his name into history by completing an astonishing 159 marathons between January 2022 and March 2025. At the age of 60, Dr. Murali took to the roads with unwavering spirit, finishing 21 full marathons and 138 half marathons, earning him a coveted place in the India Book of Records 2026 for the maximum number of marathons completed by an individual.
A former Director General of Police, Dr. Murali dedicated over three decades (1991–2022) to the Tamil Nadu Police force, known for his integrity, bravery, and steadfast commitment to justice. But retirement was only the beginning of another kind of service. He traded his uniform for running gear and began a journey that would not just redefine his limits but inspire countless others to reimagine what’s possible at any age.
What sets Dr. Murali apart is not just his physical stamina, but the philosophy that drives him. “Running is not about speed or finish lines. It’s about awakening the strength within,” he often says. His marathons are symbolic—of transitions, tenacity, and triumph over internal doubts.
“Every marathon taught me that the finish line is just the beginning of what’s possible,” says Dr. Murali.
Each marathon—run across sun-scorched roads and rain-slicked trails—was a testament to his unshakable discipline, echoing the values he upheld in uniform. His accomplishment is not just about numbers; it’s a powerful message to the world that age is no barrier to setting new goals and achieving greatness.
Dr. Murali’s passion for running also has a deeper cause. In 2018 and 2019, he was recognized in both the Asia Book of Records and the India Book of Records for marathons he ran to promote organ donation in collaboration with the Mohan Foundation. His runs have always carried a sense of mission, a drive to make every step count.
Beyond the track, Dr. Murali is also an acclaimed author of eight books. His works include Enkindling the Endorphins of Endurance (English) and Marathon (Tamil), which explore the spirit of running. His two latest books are Quantum Creation, which examines the intersection of quantum physics and spirituality, and Chasing the Lost Gods, which chronicles his tenure as Chief of the Idol Wing and his work in preserving India’s cultural heritage.
This landmark achievement is not just about personal triumph—it’s a beacon for those who dare to dream. Dr. Murali’s story redefines retirement, challenges the boundaries of age, and showcases the extraordinary possibilities that lie on the other side of courage.
