Madhya Pradesh, 20th November, 2024: The Department of Archaeology, Archives, and Museums, Madhya Pradesh, is commemorating World Heritage Week from November 19 to 25, 2024, with a series of activities highlighting the state’s rich cultural and historical legacy. As part of these celebrations, an enlightening lecture series was held on November 19 at the State Museum, Shyamla Hills, Bhopal, attracting an audience of heritage enthusiasts and scholars.
The event commenced with a warm welcome by Mrs. Urmila Shukla, Commissioner of the Department, who extended greetings to the dignitaries and attendees with tokens of appreciation. In her address, Mrs. Shukla underscored the department’s initiatives to modernize and promote Madhya Pradesh’s archaeological treasures. Noteworthy advancements include the publication of guides and manuals for museums and heritage sites, the digitization of museum collections, the introduction of WhatsApp-based ticket booking, and 3D art viewing experiences—all aimed at enhancing accessibility and engagement.
The lecture series featured presentations from three eminent speakers, who offered unique insights into the importance of heritage conservation:
Dr. Umashankar Pachauri, Information Commissioner, captivated the audience with compelling stories that emphasized archaeology as a custodian of identity and heritage. He urged the youth to take an active role in preserving cultural legacies.
Dr. Rajendra Yadav, Superintending Archaeologist, ASI Kolkata, provided an in-depth look at the responsibilities of state governments in safeguarding archaeological sites. He highlighted the importance of both tangible and intangible heritage, inspiring participants to value their cultural heritage.
Dr. Chetanya Saxena, Retired Deputy Director, Archaeology, Archives, and Museums, compared India’s unique monuments to the Seven Wonders of the World, asserting that Indian heritage stands unparalleled in its historical and cultural significance.
In addition to the lectures, attendees were treated to a captivating photo exhibition showcasing India’s ancient monuments, alongside an engaging quiz on historical sites. These activities fostered awareness and enthusiasm among younger participants, encouraging them to explore India’s diverse heritage.
