On August 28, 2024, the documentary “SONNENWAGEN – Future Mobility” will celebrate its film premiere in Aachen. At 6:15 p.m., the film will be shown live in front of an audience for the first time in the main building of RWTH Aachen University on Templergraben. The premiere promises a fascinating insight into the pioneering work of the Sonnenwagen team at RWTH and FH Aachen.

The film documents the development of the innovative solar racing car “Covestro Adelie” and the participation of the team of around 50 students in the Bridgestone Solar World Challenge 2023 in the Australian outback. Using state-of-the-art technology and innovative high-performance materials from Covestro, the students have designed an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly racing car. The solar racer paves the way for the development of environmentally friendly vehicle technologies.

“I am impressed every time I meet the students from Team Sonnenwagen. Their passion for alternative drives, lightweight construction, and the highest possible efficiency is inspiring for me. They are already showing today how the sustainable automobility of the future will be possible. They deserve to be the stars of this documentary,” says Sucheta Govil, Board Member for Marketing and Sales at Covestro. “For us at Covestro, it is a matter of course to support this team and its mission: I am all the more proud that they are also relying on high-performance materials from Covestro.”

From design to the race track

The documentary follows Team Sonnenwagen from the design of the “Covestro Adelie” through to qualifying and then the race across Australia. In addition to the technical aspects of the racing car, the documentary also focuses on the emotions, challenges, and tireless team spirit behind this ambitious project. In addition to the interviews with the dedicated students, numerous experts also have their say, including the renowned science journalist Ranga Yogeshwar, the Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport in NRW, Oliver Krischer, the former Opel boss and CEO of Continental, Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann, and Sucheta Govil from Covestro.
