Mumbai, July 30: A 20-year-old woman suffering from severe breathlessness due to a leaking heart valve underwent a minimally invasive mitral valve replacement at Wockhardt Hospitals Mumbai Central, offering her a faster recovery and excellent cosmetic outcomes without the large scar typically associated with conventional open-heart surgery.
The young woman had been experiencing progressively worsening breathlessness that began affecting her daily activities. Detailed evaluation revealed severe mitral valve regurgitation, a condition in which the mitral valve fails to close properly, causing blood to leak backwards within the heart. Left untreated, the condition can eventually lead to heart failure, reduced exercise capacity and other serious complications.
Considering the patient’s age and the impact that conventional open-heart surgery could have on her recovery and quality of life, the treating team decided to adopt a minimally invasive approach.
“Mitral valve regurgitation can significantly affect a patient’s quality of life, especially in young individuals who otherwise have many active years ahead of them. In this case, given the patient’s young age, we wanted to provide a treatment option that was not only clinically effective but also less invasive and cosmetically favourable,” said Dr. Parin Sangoi, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Wockhardt Hospitals Mumbai Central.
The procedure was performed through a small right inframammary incision with the support of the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (CVTS) team, avoiding the need for the conventional long incision through the breastbone that is commonly associated with open-heart surgery.
“Minimally invasive mitral valve replacement is relatively uncommon but offers several advantages in appropriately selected patients. The smaller incision results in reduced surgical trauma, faster recovery, less postoperative discomfort and excellent cosmetic outcomes. For young patients, these factors can make a significant difference to their overall recovery experience and confidence,” Dr. Sangoi added.
The surgery was completed successfully, leaving virtually no visible scar. The patient showed remarkable improvement in her symptoms and recovered well within a week of the procedure.
The case highlights how advances in cardiac surgery are making it possible to treat complex heart conditions through less invasive techniques, enabling patients to achieve excellent clinical outcomes while minimising the physical and emotional impact of surgery.
