91 Year-Old Successfully Undergoes Kidney Cancer Surgery at Kamineni Hospitals

Hyderabad, July 18: In a remarkable medical milestone, doctors at Kamineni Hospital successfully performed a complex radical nephrectomy on a 91-year-old patient diagnosed with an aggressive form of Renal Cell Carcinoma  demonstrating that advanced age alone should never prevent patients from receiving curative cancer treatment.

91 Year-Old Successfully Undergoes Kidney Cancer Surgery at Kamineni Hospitals

The patient, Sri Subhramanyam, a retired Central Government employee, was diagnosed with a large right-sided kidney tumour. While kidney cancer surgery is a major procedure in itself, operating on a nonagenarian presents exceptional challenges due to fragile blood vessels, reduced physiological reserve and increased anaesthetic and post-operative risks. After a comprehensive medical evaluation, the multidisciplinary team determined that the patient was fit to undergo surgery.

The procedure was successfully led by Dr. G. Avinash Reddy, Senior Consultant Surgical Oncologist, Kamineni Hospitals along with an experienced team of anaesthesiologists, intensivists, nurses and physiotherapists. The surgery involved meticulous dissection around the inferior vena cava, one of the body’s largest veins, and careful isolation of the renal artery and vein. Despite the tumour’s complexity, the cancerous kidney was removed successfully with minimal blood loss, marking a significant achievement in geriatric cancer surgery.

Following the operation, the patient was shifted to Kamineni Hospital’s advanced Intensive Care Unit, where he received continuous cardiac and kidney function monitoring, specialised respiratory care, early mobilisation and personalised pain management. This coordinated post-operative care played a crucial role in preventing complications and ensuring a smooth recovery.

Speaking on the successful outcome, Dr. G. Avinash Reddy said,

“This case proves that age alone should never determine whether a patient receives cancer treatment. Careful patient selection, meticulous surgical planning and a strong multidisciplinary approach can deliver excellent outcomes even in patients over 90 years of age. Modern cancer care is guided by a patient’s overall fitness rather than chronological age.”

He further emphasised that the success of such complex surgeries depends not only on surgical expertise but also on advanced anaesthesia, critical care, nursing support and rehabilitation working together seamlessly.

Sri Subhramanyam is recovering well, with his remaining kidney functioning normally and his health improving steadily.

This landmark case highlights Kamineni Hospitals expertise in handling high-risk oncological surgeries and sends a powerful message that age should never be considered a barrier to hope, treatment or recovery. With the right expertise, advanced infrastructure and comprehensive multidisciplinary care, even patients in their nineties can successfully overcome cancer and regain a better quality of life.
