Mar 26: The National Centre for Performing Arts presents the world premier and marks the debut of The Monk and The Warrior, a cross-cultural theatrical epic written by Mahesh Dattani, conceived and directed by Jonathan Taikina Taylor (The SuperGeographics, USA), with music by Eero Hämeenniemi.
The play displays a love story between a bodhisattva and Alexander with a blend of queer narratives spanning across space, culture and times. The duo on a surreal journey that begins with their legendary encounter, unfolding into a tapestry of stories drawn from Western and Indian traditions, and marking the beginning of a dreamlike exploration of their relationship.
The play explores the challenges and complexities of loving across cultures, delving into fragile connections through a visually stunning and emotionally driven narrative. Classic tales such as the Monkey and the Crocodile, Chandravati and Malavati, Shams and Rumi, and the goddesses Fortuna and Jyotish are reinterpreted to reflect on the cost of loving across cultures. What it means to truly accept, understand and love one another is redefined through a blend of contemporary artistic expression, curiosity and desire.
