Born into an Australian family steeped in Bhakti traditions, Premanjali, a global conscious music artist, bridges two musical worlds with her debut single, Shyama Anna. Premanjali, who grew up between cultures, found her voice in the sacred hymns of India while absorbing the rhythms of Jazz, R&B, Blues and Bollywood music. Her debut arrives as both an auditory and visual experience, as the cinematic video for Shyama Anna beautifully depicts her devotional yearning against the exquisite Kerala backwaters. Talking about her debut single, Premanjali said,
“Growing up in Australia, I always felt like I was a part of India because my family was deeply connected to Bhakti traditions. Kirtans and bhajans were the soundtracks of my childhood, but I was also drawn to everything from jazz and blues to the vibrant music of Indian cinema. Despite this diversity. Or perhaps because of it, it felt essential to return to my roots and honour these beautiful hymns that imparted philosophy and served as a powerful channel of expression. Shyama Anna is an auspicious beginning of my career as a music artist and the first of many stories that I will share with the world through music.”
Premanjali’s interest in spirituality began early on in her life. Yet, it never confined her, and instead opened doors to a wider world of sound and expression. While bhajans and kirtans formed her spiritual foundation, Bollywood music, Jazz, R&B, Blues, and other music genres also helped broaden her musical horizon. With Shyama Anna, she channels this rich heritage into an endeavour bringing the ancient wisdom of bhakti into contemporary sound.
